As summer slowly turns to fall in Las Vegas it’s time to start thinking about the winter holidays. I’m not the only one that saw the first Christmas light displays of the season at Costco, am I? That wasn’t a mirage was it?
“For small businesses marketers the first thing that might come to mind when looking ahead to late November and December is what kind of “Black Friday” promotions you can offer this year. If that’s you, great job! You’re thinking ahead, and I like it.

Creating present or future business is always a good idea. But so is thanking your past customers and keeping those relationships burning brighter than the menorah on the 8th night of Hanukkah, or an over-the-top holiday lights display in your neighbor’s yard.
It may feel like the holiday season is a ways off, but now is the best time to get holiday photos taken for your small business. Here’s why.
Give Yourself Time
Don’t put it off till the last minute. Give yourself, your photographer and your printer enough time to get them together so getting them out the door and into the mail in December is easy.
As a photographer, I can tell you, summer is my slow season, and fall is my busiest time of year. Getting on my calendar to schedule a photo session gets more difficult in the fall because my team and I book so many weddings in the fall. Add to that, senior portraits, and all the sessions for small businesses trying to complete their year-long and fourth quarter marketing goals and time just gets short in a hurry.
Last minute additions are doable, and there’s always room in my day to help out a fellow small business owner, but we’ll both be less stressed if you book it earlier than later.

Make it Stress-free
Holiday cards for your small business should be fun. They should be a happy way to soft sell your company, your culture and your story to people already in your universe. Late summer is the perfect time to craft a sparkly stress-free holiday photo session with no end of the year deadline pressure in place yet. (And also in part because your summer tan is really glowing right now and you look fabulous.)
You might not be in the holiday spirit yet, but it’s always a good time to laugh and be jolly. At the studio I can throw on some Christmas music, break out the jingle bells and pass around the egg-nog if that’s what it takes to bring out your jolliest side.
All Publicity is Good Publicity
Any time you can get your name out there in front of your clients and customers it’s a good thing. To some, the holidays can feel overwhelming, and over-commercialized, and not a good time to crowd people’s in-boxes with yet another advertising message. But I think holiday cards from your small business is a great way to subtly advertise. Variety counts for just as much as repetition. Variety and repetition both boost memory recall and oftentimes that’s exactly what your small business needs.

When you send out a holiday card from your business you’re ringing two bells with one shake. Holiday cards are different from the radio spots or google ads you’re running. They look and feel different, have a different message and are delivered in a different way than much of the regular advertising and marketing you do throughout the year. They are experienced differently and have the chance to connect with your audience differently, too. The holidays are a good excuse for your small business to make it new and exciting. Don’t send out the same card as last year. Switch things up with fresh photos.
The Gift That Keeps on Giving
A fresh set of photos of you and your team has more staying power than you think. The images you select for your holiday cards can also be used for social media posts on your website, in your newsletter and in other marketing materials.
In addition, a small-branding photo session doesn’t have to be all about capturing the perfect snap for your holiday card. During your session we can also mix in some photos for other uses.
You could use photos from your session as a temporary profile picture on your LinkedIn page or Facebook headers. I’ve even seen them get swapped in for photos in e-mail signatures. Spread your holiday cheer where ever you think it fits. You’re the face of your small business and it never hurts to flash a smile.
